This sweetheart is Yara! 💗
QUICK ADOPTION || TO VISIT IN THE NETHERLANDS (DELFT) || NO ADOPTION FEE
Yara is a bright, cheeky, and joyful 9-month-old pup with a heart full of love and mischief. She’s bursting with personality and ready to bring laughter and affection to her forever home 🥰
History:
Yara’s journey began in the most heartbreaking way. At just three months old, she was found alone in the middle of a rural highway during one of our feeding rounds. Starving and disoriented, she was desperately digging into the tar on the road, trying to satisfy the hunger that had clearly plagued her for far too long. She was dangerously thin, barely able to walk, and seemingly unaware of the danger she was in.
We couldn’t leave her behind, so we scooped her up and brought her into the care of a loving foster home with Eva from Tikiri Trust (another fantastic organization dedicated to helping Sri Lankan street dogs and cats). There, Yara experienced kindness for the first time: soft bedding, nourishing meals (chicken liver was a big hit!), and gentle hands that nursed her back to health. Her tick fever was treated, and slowly but surely, the light returned to her eyes 🕯️
Character and abilities:
As her strength returned, so did her spunky spirit — and what a spirit it is! Yara is full of playful energy and endearing mischief. When she lived in her foster home, she loved tumbling around with other pups (and even bigger dogs!) and always managed to find a little trouble to get into — just enough to keep you smiling. She discovered life’s small joys, like napping in a cozy chair or playing with a coconut branch, and she’s been making the absolute most of her second chance.
Yara is also incredibly friendly and people-focused. She adores attention, is eager to please, and loves making new friends — human, canine, and even feline. She loves giving kisses, so if you want to be showered in kisses and cuddles, she may be the one for you! She is very well-socialized and always excited to meet other dogs (sometimes she can be a little nervous with much bigger dogs, but this usually disappears after a few minutes). She does not react aggressively to cats, so a home with cats (with a gradual introduction) is definitely possible.
Yara is comfortable in a home environment and adapts easily to new surroundings. She was brought to the Netherlands by a lovely family, with whom she has been living since the beginning of September 2025. However, due to health issues of one of the owners, they can no longer give her the attention she deserves. We therefore believe it’s best to find Yara a new home with people who can dote on her for the rest of her life.
In her first month in the Netherlands, Yara adapted to the European lifestyle very quickly. She showed no anxiety during the transition and embraced every new experience with curiosity and wonder.
She loves walking around her neighborhood and shows good leash behavior. She has adjusted to a three-walks-per-day routine. She enjoys greeting people and other dogs along the way and is always eager to observe her surroundings. She is super curious — everything new is an exciting learning adventure! (Maybe we should have named her Dora the Explorer instead 😉).
She is also fully potty-trained!
Her adopter is currently feeding her rice, chicken, and pumpkin, but is slowly transitioning her to dry food. Yara is very eager with food, so you can decide what you’d like to feed her. Please note, however, that some types of dry food upset her tummy, so you may need to find what works best for her (or continue with her current diet during the transition).
To be fully transparent, here are the “naughty” things to expect: she tends to treat anything left lying around as a toy, so you’ll need to watch out for chewing. We believe this behavior can be managed with good guidance, increased exercise (especially mental exercise like sniffing mats), and may naturally taper down as she grows older. Yara also finds it unpleasant to walk on wet grass or in the rain. If you dislike rainy walks yourself, this may actually be a plus! Nevertheless, a good rain jacket and some confidence training can help her get over this. She still needs to learn how to stay home alone; her current adopter is working on this gradually, and her new family should continue the training.
Physical characteristics:
She currently weighs about 9 kg and is expected to grow to around 13–14 kg when fully grown. Her sweet face and deep brown eyes melt hearts instantly, and her paintbrush-tip tail waves in the air as she bounces off to her next mission.
Health and practicalities:
She’s healthy, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and sterilized. She is registered in the Netherlands and has a European pet passport — you would only need to transfer the registration to your name (depending on your country’s regulations).
What kind of family will Yara suit?
We absolutely adore Yara and believe she’s meant for a family who will love her as deeply as she loves back. She belongs in a home where she’ll be cherished, cuddled, and given every opportunity to thrive. She needs a family that is active, adventurous, fun, and busy — perhaps a young couple or a young family. She can also happily live in a home with other pets.
Interested in giving Yara her forever home?
Please contact us via email (asosadoptions@gmail.com). We will first arrange a video call with the Animal SOS Adoptions Team, so that we can assess whether Yara is a good match for you. After that, if you’d like to meet her, we’ll set up a visit (exciting!!). If all goes well and you’d like to welcome Yara into your family, we’ll send you an adoption contract — and once it’s signed, you can pick up your new best friend!
